Onboard Medical & Safety Training
Yachting safety and risk management can often seem complex and overwhelming – especially when thinking about potential medical emergencies. Many yacht crew members, despite being STCW-certified, don’t feel confident in their ability to provide basic, life-saving medical care.
Prio1 Onboard Medical & Safety Training teaches your crew to respond to emergencies calmly and methodically. As a result, crew members will build confidence and be able to provide acute medical care and ensure everyone’s safety, even in high-stress, high-pressure situations.
Emergencies can’t always be prevented, but they can be managed.
Our training will help your crew:
- Recognize and evaluate safety risks and medical emergencies
- Properly respond to emergencies based on medical theory and practice
- Properly utilize onboard medical kits and material
- Coordinate with telemedical services to provide optimal onboard medical assistance

FAQ
-
Does a training require any preparation?
Yes. Although limited, both training programmes do require some preparation, to help achieve the best results. We recommend beforehand exploring your onboard medical kits and materials with your crew. Ensure you gather any questions crew members may have concerning: onboard medical kits and safety materials, providing acute medical care, potential safety risks related to the yacht and any onboard or offboard activities.
-
Are there any entry requirements for the training Prio1 offers?
There are no specific entry requirements. Every crew member is eligible to join our training regardless of background, work experience, age, or crew position.
-
Does the Prio1 Onboard Medical & Safety Training replace the official STCW training?
No, the training Prio1 offers is additional to STCW training, and does not replace the mandatory STCW training. Unlike the standard STCW training, Prio1's training programs are specifically crafted for yacht crew. Additionally, Prio1 will deliver the training on your yacht, in a familiar environment for the participants, and using your yacht’s own medical kits, devices, and equipment.
-
I already have my STCW. What is the benefit of doing the Prio1 Onboard Medical & Safety Training?
The Medical & Safety Training focuses specifically on delivering acute basic medical care, which is only a small part of the STCW training. More importantly, Prio1’s training is aimed at training your crew members to provide emergency medical care, rather than just teaching them how to do so.
This is a crucial difference. Successfully performing under pressure, such as taking action in acute medical emergencies, depends on cognition, emotion, and technical skills. Most people are cognitively and emotionally overwhelmed in case of medical emergencies, preventing them from accessing and exercising their technical skills.
Therefore, it is crucial for crew members to be able to rely on learned procedures, experience, and routine. The more familiar the situation, the more rational and effective the response.Prio1 emphasises the importance of establishing and maintaining a strong foundation. Consistent training, repetition of information, and practice of skills are essential. In addition to yacht-organized training, Prio1 recommends regular refresher training, ideally every 6-12 months.
-
Does Prio1 provide customized training?
Yes, all Prio1 training sessions can be customized to the yacht, crew composition, and individual crew members’ needs and requests. In addition, we are able to deliver our training at any location in the world, at any desired time.
-
What is the duration of a training session?
The duration of a training depends on the yacht, crew composition, and individual crew members’ needs and requests, but generally requires one full day. If desired, the training can also be spread out over two or more days. In case there are a large amount of crew questions around the use of on-board medical kits and devices, it may be necessary to schedule two days. Therefore, it is important to obtain a clear idea of your crew’s needs and questions before scheduling the training.
-
Will crew receive a certificate after completion of a training?
Yes, crew will receive a certificate on succesful completion of the basic training; CPR & use of AED, approved bij the European Resuscitation Council. Validity of the certificate is 1 year. We recommend to recertify, ideally at or before expiry of the certificate.
-
Does Prio1 offers refresher training?
Yes. It’s important to maintain basic theoretical and practical knowledge and skills on a regular basis, to minimize risks and concerns, and maximize the safety and of yacht crew and passengers. Additionally, techniques and technology improve over time, and guidelines may have changed. Prio1 recommends refreshing at least once a year, to make sure your crew’s knowledge is up to date, enabling them to continue to feel safe and confident in their ability to handle medical emergencies. If required, we can create a specific training scheduled customized for your crew.
